The US Announces a Full List of Federal Holiday Dates for 2024: On this day each year, millions of Americans are granted a day off in remembrance of the nation’s former leaders. Initially, the purpose of the third Monday of February was to honor one individual exclusively: George Washington. During the 1880s, Presidents’ Day (12 February) was observed as the birthday of the nation’s first president. Nonetheless, as time passed, a general admiration for the nation’s numerous vanguards developed.
During deliberations on the Uniform Monday Holiday Bill in 1968, Congress considered the possibility of renaming Washington’s birthday to Presidents’ Day. The decision to adopt the new title was also intended to commemorate the birthday of Abraham Lincoln on February 22. The general public did not, however, adopt the new moniker until 1971.
