Google Photos Update: Google Photos App users are reportedly testing a new feature that enables the backup of RAW images. It is currently being rolled out to both the iOS and Android applications. RAW images, which are unprocessed and contain more detail, are utilized by professional photographers to grade or modify the images more effectively.

Google Photos Update: Now Supports RAW Photo Backup

RAW images are now the norm on smartphones as a result of the camera applications’ extensive support for the format. Unlike in the past, RAW photos are now uploaded to the Google Cloud by default via the Google Photos app. The application displayed a notification that read, “Google Photos now supports the backup of raw images.”

A badge denoting RAW images is displayed on the photos. At this time, the functionality is only apparent on the Pixel 8 series; it is not present on the Pixel Fold or any other device. Despite any official declarations from Google, the current state of knowledge regarding the new features, their availability, and their compatibility remains uncertain.

No configurations or adjustments can be made to prevent the Photos application from transferring RAW files to Google Storage. Even navigating to Photos Preferences > Backup > Backup Quality and selecting the Storage option yields no resolution. Given the 15GB of unrestricted storage that is currently accessible, the RAW photos will undoubtedly occupy that space rather rapidly. It is exclusively suggested for photographers employing it in a professional capacity.

Numerous new user-centric features are being implemented by Google Photos in an effort to enhance the overall experience. The Google Photos application recently received an update to its share menu, allowing users to submit images, create new albums, and add additional images to existing ones. The Giant also introduced desktop editing tools that provide users with the ability to select various filters and make fundamental adjustments such as adjusting brightness, saturation, HDR levels, and more.
