Hansa Mehta – The Revolutionary:
On July 3, 1897, the birth of Dr. Mehta occurred. Her father was the then-Dewan of Baroda, Manubhai Nandshankar Mehta, and she came from a wealthy family. She returned to India after completing her studies in journalism and sociology in England. During this time, Sarojini Naidu and Mahatma Gandhi began to have a significant impact on her life. Soon after, she assumed a leading role in the Swadeshi and Non-Cooperation movements and became fully engaged in the liberation struggle.

Hansa’s Presidency:
Hansa was a member of the fundamental rights subcommittee and the advisory committee. She advocated for women’s justice and equality in India. Hansa was appointed to the Bombay Schools Committee in 1926. She presided over the All India Women’s Conference from 1945 to 1946. In her presidential address to the All India Women’s Conference in Hyderabad, she proposed the creation of a Charter of Women’s Rights. She held a number of positions in India between 1945 and 1960, including vice chancellor of SNDT Women’s University, member of the All India Secondary Board of Education, president of the Inter University Board of India, and vice chancellor of Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda.
Hansa was selected to represent India as a delegate to the UN Commission on Human Rights around this time. She found herself on the United Nations Commission on Human Rights as Vice-Chair to Eleanor Roosevelt, one of the most distinguished American first ladies to date.
Years later, in 2015, Ban Ki-Moon, the Secretary General of the United Nations, would note, “The world can thank an Indian daughter, Dr. Hansa Mehta, for changing the term in the UDHR.”
