Homemade Pie Day 2023

Homemade Pie Day 2023: Homemade Pie Day occurs annually on August 1. It is a day to honour pie, a cuisine that dates back to ancient Egypt. From the ancient Greeks to the Romans to the British and, eventually, the Americans, pies have existed in various forms in numerous cultures around the globe. Today, pie has come to represent American culture. It can be consumed as an entrée, dessert, or snack.

The background of Homemade Pie Day

Ancient Egyptians are the earliest civilization known to have possessed a pie dish. It typically consisted of a honey-filled crust prepared from wheat, oats, rye, or barley. Ancient Greeks and Romans had pastries comparable to the modern pie. The Romans, for instance, frequently coated meat with a pastry composed of flour, oil, and water. However, the purpose of this dough was to preserve the flesh and not as a meal. A Roman cookbook titled “Apicius” from the first century was discovered to contain recipes similar to those for pie shells.

In the United Kingdom, pies were frequently referred to as ‘coffyns.’ They were primarily used to preserve meat, particularly on long sea voyages when fresh meat was unavailable. During the Middle Ages, these pastries became more elaborate as chefs vied to outdo one another in terms of presentation. When the pie cases were removed to expose the delicious fillings, pies were frequently the centrepiece of the food table at formal banquets. Occasionally, live actors or musicians were concealed within desserts to spring out as a surprise.

Before the 15th century, pies typically contained only meat or fish, but shortly fruits and custard were added. According to legend, the first cherry pie was created for Queen Elizabeth I in the sixteenth century. As English settlers migrated to North America, they brought pies with them. Initially, crusts were typically composed of coarse flour and suet. Pies quickly became an iconic American cuisine and are now strongly associated with traditional American culture. When asked why they were going to war during World War II, soldiers responded, “For mum and apple pie.”
