How To Know Your Ayurvedic Prakriti:Ever wondered why you are different from your parents even though you are literally born from their cells. Shouldn’t you be just like them? If not parents, then shouldn’t every sibling be similar because they are born from the same parents. But we all are different, even identical twins are different from each other either physically, mentally or emotionally. The concept of Prakriti in Ayurveda explains this difference between each living organism and their uniqueness.
We shall be discussing about the very interesting concept in this article. It’ll be a long one, so brace yourself!
What is Prakriti?
In Ayurveda, Prakriti is your unique body-mind blueprint formed by the balance of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas at birth or conception. Different Prakriti have different characteristic features. It essentially defines a person’s physical, physiological, and psychological characteristics. Prakriti is what makes Ayurveda distinct. Choice of treatment, medicine varies for every individual based upon their Prakriti. Ayurveda also hints about food which is conductive, foods to be avoided according to Prakriti.
Types of Deha Prakriti (Seven types):
There are 7 types of Deha (bodily) Prakriti as mentioned in Ayurvedic texts. There are Mansik (psychological) Prakriti as well bit I will be discussing about those some other day. Right now, our focus is to understand these Deha Prakriti, and to make it more interesting and easy to understand I’ll also give an example of Bollywood character for each 6 of them. You can ignore any paragraph from this article, but not this one.
Single Dosha Prakriti: Rare
1. Vata Prakriti
Super quick on their feet, always buzzing with ideas. Think of someone who can’t sit still for more than five minutes. Only catch? They dry out like a forgotten chapati, get cold easily, and anxiety shows up uninvited.
Bollywood Example: Geet (Kareena Kapoor, Jab We Met) Honestly, could anyone be more Vata than Geet? Bouncing off the walls, talking a mile a minute, wild ideas popping out of nowhere. She’s basically a tornado in lip gloss, fun, spontaneous, but god, she can be moody and restless as well.

2. Pitta Prakriti
Brains for days and ambition to match, but man, do they get cranky. These folks catch heat really fast. Passionate? Totally. But they can snap if you poke them wrong, and sometimes their guts are literally on fire (acidity).
Bollywood Example: Kabir Singh (Shahid Kapoor, Kabir Singh) Kabir is basically a walking Pitta volcano burning with desire, laser-focused, but the anger issues He’s got that intense stare and a drive that could bulldoze a mountain, but good luck if you cross him on a bad day.

3. Kapha Prakriti
These people are just steady. Super calm, loyal, and everyone’s best hugger. Sometimes so chill they turn into human potatoes or sloth bears.
Bollywood Example: Prem (Salman Khan from Hum Saath Saath Hain) Prem is the poster boy for Kapha; always cool, always gentle, family comes first, and you’ll never catch him starting drama. He’s that rock everyone leans on.
Dual Dosha Prakriti: Most Common
4. Vata-Pitta Prakriti
Picture someone with a mind that never stops plus the energy of a Red Bull addict. Super creative, sharp, but can go from excited to irritable before you even blink.
Bollywood Example: Ved (Ranbir Kapoor from Tamasha) Ved has imagination pouring out of his ears (Vata), but pair that with his burning need to find himself (Pitta) and you’ve got a guy who’s both dreamy and intense sometimes at the same time. Head in the clouds, but rocket fuel in his shoes.

5. Vata-Kapha Prakriti
Compassionate, dreamy, but sometimes things move a bit slow. Digestion might be a struggle, or their knees creak louder than the floorboards.
Bollywood Example: Rohit (Hrithik Roshan, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai) Rohit is gentle and grounded (total Kapha), but he’s also got that playful, creative spark (Vata) that makes him impossible not to love.
6. Kapha-Pitta Prakriti
Physically strong and mentally tough. They get work done. Only problem? They might overheat (literally and emotionally), or get stuck with congestion.
Bollywood Example: Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan from Deewaar) Vijay got that big, bold Kapha strength, but his ambition and fire (Pitta) are what make him a legend. He’s righteous, family-first, but don’t mess with him there’s a volcano under that calm exterior.
Tridoshic Prakriti
7. Vata-Pitta-Kapha Prakriti
Basically, this is the human equivalent of winning the genetic lottery. Balanced, adaptable, never sick, always on top of things. Everyone secretly hates them because they’re just that sorted.
Bollywood Example: Raj (Shah Rukh Khan from DDLJ) Raj is chill when he needs to be, romantic at the right time, practical when it counts he’s got it all, no sweat. Emotional, playful, responsible somehow, he manages to juggle it, and yep, that’s why Simran (and everyone else) falls for him.

Dosha Combinations and Health
- Single Dosha: Rare; can be very sensitive to imbalance
- Dual Dosha: Common; higher disease susceptibility if not balanced
- Tridoshic: Best health potential; resilient against most diseases
Significance of Knowing One’s Prakriti
Not a Disease, But Your Nature: Look, everybody’s got their own dosha vibe, and it’s nothing weird it’s just how you’re wired. Like, some people are straight-up Vata: always brainstorming, a little spacey, maybe bouncing off the walls.
Predicts Disease Tendency: Knowing your dosha isn’t just some personality quiz. It actually tips you off to the kind of health messes you might run into. Let’s say you’re Vata-dominant and following the classic Vata dominant habits like sleeping at random hours, traveling all the time, never getting enough sleep, surviving on salads and cold brew. Next thing you know, you’re anxious, constipated, your skin’s flaky, and your joints sound like crackers.
A Tool for Prevention: Once you know your Prakriti (that’s your dosha blueprint), you can actually dodge a ton of problems. Like, you don’t have to wait for things to go sideways. Make a few tweaks think warm, hearty meals and a solid routine if you’re Vata. Pitta people: chill with the hot wings and take a break from doom-scrolling. For Kaphas, get moving, mix up your meals, try something new for once.
Improves Treatment Outcomes: When it comes to treatment, Ayurveda’s all about playing to your strengths. The same treatment that chills out a Vata person could totally miss the mark for Kapha. It’s like why would you give a wool blanket to someone already sweating? A Vata might freak out over insomnia or creaky joints but bounce back quick from a Pitta meltdown if you treat them right. That’s the magic: it’s not just “one-size-fits-all,” it’s actually about you, not some generic patient profile.
How To Know Your Ayurvedic Prakriti?
Earlier it used to be a tiresome task to determine a person’s prakriti with a long set of questions to be asked.
With advancements in Ayurveda and integration of modern technologies, the AYUSH Ministry launched an app assigned to assess a person’s Prakriti. The app is called the “Prakruti Parikshan App” available on Google Play Store as well as Apple Store.
About Prakruti Parikshan App

Prakruti Parikshan is a simple, survey based mobile app that allows the citizen to explore their own unique Prakriti (body constitution) according to traditional Ayurvedic principles. With the support of trained volunteers, citizens go through a guided questionnaire, finishing with a digital Prakruti Certificate. The certificate will be a useful snapshot of individual citizen’s natural body constitution (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) or a combination of all three.
The app allows the citizen on-boarding process from registration, to certificate generation, giving citizens access, allowing them to be more aware of their own health and lifestyle.
Key Features
Fast Registration with QR Code: Any citizen can register for the app using their mobile number and OTP. As soon as they register a unique QR code is produced which will become the citizen’s ID for the entire process.
Access to Volunteer Support with QR Code: Launched volunteers can easily scan the citizen QR code and access their basic details, this is opportune time to check for missing details to use once they have access to the citizen.
Prakriti Questionnaire with Guided Questions: After citizens’ have completed the preliminary registration and use of the QR code with the volunteer, the volunteers’ will guide citizens through a few simple questions related to lifestyle and body tendencies. Answers are recorded in real-time, which validates the final result as well.
Personalized Video & Slogan: After responding to the questionnaire, the volunteer helps the citizen record a brief video as they share a personalized slogan, a unique and creative aspect of the process.
Instant Digital Prakriti Certificate: After completing the survey, the citizen receives a well-designed digital certificate detailing their Prakruti type in a handsome certificate, which will enhance their knowledge of their body.
Photo Upload & Final Submission: Finally, the citizen’s photo with their certificate and the completed survey are uploaded through the app.
Ayurvedic Prakriti Assessment Quiz
If you are not in the mood or state to use this app, I have a solution for you to determine your Prakriti easily just by reading the article further. We won’t be discussing specifications of every body part in each Prakriti as they are available in the above mentioned app. If you want to know each and every feature of all Prakriti distinguishly, you can go through the official and standardised journals here.

Now check your dominant type(s):
If mostly A? Vata Prakriti
If mostly B? Pitta Prakriti
If mostly C? Kapha Prakriti
If two types are nearly equal? you may have a dual Prakriti (e.g., Vata-Pitta)
If all three are nearly equal them you may be Tridoshic.
However it’s better to ask a Ayurvedic doctor or you can even ask a BAMS student to get your Prakriti accurately.
How To Know Your Ayurvedic Prakriti: Things to Keep In Mind
- The age, physical and psychological status of the individual, presence and absence of any illness, and the seasonal influence are the major factors that tend to distort the outcome of this assessment.
- Elderly people are likely to exhibit dominant features of Vata such as dry and wrinkled skin.
- These features of Vata are likely to be exhibited dominantly in extreme winter as well.
- A depressed over-eating individual is likely to present with dominant features of Kapha.
- Differences in the subjective perceptions of the physicians also can make the assessment ambiguous resulting in high inter-rater variability.
- The absence of definite recommendation for identifying one’s constitution to be either due to a single Dosha (Eka-doshaja) or due to two Doshas (Dvandvaja) is another problem.
Also, there is no data available to show the predominance of a particular type of Prakriti in a particular population.
Ayurgenomics: Modern Correlation with AyuSoft

Ayurgenomics is the integration of Ayurveda’s concept of Prakriti (an individual’s unique constitution) with modern genomics, aiming to develop personalized medicine by linking genetic markers to Ayurvedic classifications.
A genome wide study indicated certain correlation between Ayurvedic Prakriti classification with genomic diversity. A study on the subject has been done by the Centre of Cellular and Molecular Biology, Hyderabad.
A research team at the CCMB under the leadership of Dr. Thangaraj has taken up the mega program. Well trained Ayurvedic physicians screened a total of 3,416 normal healthy male subjects between 20-30 years of the age and same set of people were also screened by software called AyuSoft developed by CDAC Banglore.
The blood samples were collected by respective labs. Isolation of DNA and genomic studies were carried out at CCMB using Affymetrix 6.0 SNP chip. The chip brings out single nucleotide difference in the genome amongst the tested samples.
After analyzing these single nucleotide polymorphism, it was revealed that about 52 gebes might be responsible for specifying the individual’s Dosha or Prakriti.
They further validated the finding with 297 Indian population samples known as ancestory. They observed significant association between CYP2C19 genotype and major classes of Prakriti types. The extensive metabolizer (EM) genotype was found to be predominant in Pitta Prakriti (91%). We all by now are clear with the fact that Acharyas also suggested that a person with Pitta Prakriti has best metabolism amongst all.
Poor metabolizer (PM) genotype was highest in Kapha Prakriti as suggested by Acharyas in the ancient era where no such technologies were invented. Subsequently they found PGM1 correlates with phenotype of Pitta as described in the Charaka Samhita suggesting that the phenotypical classification of India’s traditional medicine has a genetic basis.
After all the extensive researches, CCMB coined the definition of Prakriti as:
Prakriti are discreet phenotypes and they are determined on the basis of physical, psychological, physiological and behavioral traits.
Since Prakriti underlie an individual predisposition to disease as well as response to treatment, it is imperative in Ayurvedic practice to identify the Prakriti of a patient before treatment.
