Among the three candidates shortlisted for the post of member-secretary of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), the government has chosen Virendra Kumar Malhotra.

A professor of economics at Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, he has cases of cheating, forgery, and dishonest misappropriation against him. In an exclusive copy accessed by Newsd, the professor along with his family members is accused of fraudulently selling 200 UTI shares which were stolen in the first place through a share broking company owned by them.

The case was registered in the Sadar Bazar police station and was first decided by the district court which ordered the return of all the shares and appropriate compensation was also ordered, but after his refusal the matter later shifted to the Allahabad High Court.

The case was filed on December 15th, 2000 and is still under hearing as Malhotra is charged under sections- 420, 468, 471 and 403.

Meanwhile the other two candidates are Delhi University professor Shri Prakash Singh and Jawaharlal Nehru University professor Sanjay Bhardwaj. Questions are being raised over his credentials as many point out his right-winged ideological alignment as the reason behind his appointment. The government has chosen him from the three candidates recommended by a search-cum-selection committee set up to appoint the new member-secretary.
