International Burger Day 2023: History, Dates and Facts

International Burger Day is observed annually on May 28. Burgers are one of the world’s most popular foods for good cause. They are quick, economical, and delicious. Formerly regarded as inferior to premier cuts, ground beef was once regarded as a low-cost byproduct, but it is now widely used for hamburgers. Different garnishes, condiments, and variants have contributed to the burger’s global popularity. International Hamburger Day is a commemoration of the fact that burgers are always served on a bun, regardless of whether they are pan-fried, flame-broiled, or barbecued.

HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL BURGER DAY

Although the hamburger is a symbol of American fast cuisine, its origins are obscure. From the military barracks of Genghis Khan to German steamships landing in New York Harbour, the humble hamburger has led an incredibly eventful life.

Aside from being named after the German city of Hamburg, no one knows the origin of the hamburger or how it received its name. In 1758, a recipe for a dish known as “Hamburg Sausage” was published. This appears to be the origin of the connection to Hamburg. According to some historians, the Hamburg America Line was a cruise line that served identical sandwiches to its passengers during the mid-1800s and gave the sandwich its name. Some claim that Danish immigrant Louis Lassen devised the hamburger in New Haven in 1900 using European principles.

The alternative explanation is that it was constructed at the World’s Fair. As reported by the “New York Tribune” in 1904 at the St. Louis Food Festival, Louis Lassen’s story was popular in 1900 in the United States, alluding to the hamburger as “the innovation of a food vendor on the pike.” According to reports, a businessman was hungry and required food quickly. Supposedly, Louis invented the burger by placing grilled sirloin between two slices of bread. Otto Krause, who is also credited with creating the hamburger, is largely disregarded because his name has three distinct spellings, as is typical for German names. Who was the original creator of the popular dish is still a point of contention today. Despite its contested origins, it is undeniable that the holiday deserves to be celebrated. Allow no one to convince you otherwise.
