International English Language Day History

Invading Britain in the fifth century A.D., three Germanic tribes laid the foundation for the English language. From the territories that are now Denmark and North Germany, the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes traversed the North Sea. The majority of individuals from Britain spoke Celtic upon their arrival. They were forced to migrate to the north and west, which are now referred to as Wales, Ireland, and Scotland, after the invaders drove them aside.

The Germanic nations created the Old English language between 450 and 1100 A.D., which is the archaic form of the English that is still widely spoken today. In 1100 A.D., Old English began to decline. The Normandy duke William the Conqueror’s invasion of England marked the beginning of the country’s linguistic division. In the future, French predominated over English among the upper class and English among the lesser class. This division developed into Middle English in the 14th century, which was a linguistic melting pot formed when French words were added to Old English. Eventually, Middle English emerged as the dominant language in Britain.

The emergence of Modern English occurred in the early 16th century, coinciding with a notable transformation in the language’s phonetics. This period, known as the “Great Vowel Shift,” witnessed the progressive diminution in the pronunciation of vowels in the English language. The advent of printing for texts and books during this period established modern English as a standard in Britain. The initial publication of an English language dictionary occurred in 1604.

The primary distinction between contemporary English and Modern English of the sixteenth century is vocabulary. This was the result of the Industrial Revolution and the expansion of the British Empire worldwide. The Industrial Revolution necessitated the expansion of vocabulary. However, this period also marked the pinnacle of the British Empire’s colonial expansion, encompassing a quarter of the globe’s territories and inevitably requiring the adoption of foreign lexicon.
