The History of J.J. Roberts’ Birthday

Joseph Jenkins Roberts was born in Norfolk, Virginia, United States, in 1809. Roberts, who was raised in the marine business of his adoptive father, James Roberts, led a relatively privileged existence for an African American at the time, being the son of a free person of color. The senior Roberts passed away near his family’s relocation to Petersburg. The younger Roberts was a long-time employee of the business that his late father owned. A barbershop apprenticed him to William Colson, one of the town’s most erudite African American residents. Colson held the ministry as well. Colson, recognizing Roberts’s brilliance, granted the young man access to his library, igniting in him a renewed interest in intellectual endeavors.

Roberts acquired considerable affluence and education despite his status as a free man; however, his African heritage continued to impose specific social constraints on him. Upon becoming aware of the American Colonization Society’s endeavors to establish a colony along the African coast, he accompanied a party of Virginians as they departed for Monrovia, the colony capital of Liberia. In 1829, Roberts, his mother, and all but one of his siblings embarked on a voyage to Africa.

Roberts assumed the role of high bailiff of Liberia in 1833, a responsibility that entailed tax collection from colonies inhabited by indigenous peoples. Roberts assumed the position of vice governor in 1839 after his appointment by the American Colonization Society. Two years after the death of his superior, Thomas Buchanan, Roberts assumed the role of the inaugural African American sovereign of Liberia.

His leadership during the subsequent five years of the appeal for sovereignty in Liberia resulted in the country’s independence being proclaimed in 1847. Elected as the inaugural president, Roberts completed an eight-year term in office. Roberts, a devout Christian, educated and converted several Liberians to Christianity. In Liberia, he also put an end to the Atlantic slave trade.
