Japan Tourist Visa for Indians 2023: Japan is a breathtaking destination that combines ancient traditions, a vibrant culture, and majestic natural scenery. If you are an Indian citizen planning a trip to Japan, the following information pertains to the Japan tourist visa for Indians.

Residents of India can apply for a visa allowing them to stay in Japan for up to 90 days for tourism, business, attending conferences, and visiting friends and family. The visa is issued by the visa application centre of VFS Global.

Notably, the Consulate-General of Japan in Mumbai also issues Japan visas to citizens of the following Indian jurisdictions: Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Goa, and the Union Territories of Daman, Diu, Dadra, and Nagar Haveli.

India tourism visa to Japan

Residents of India can apply for a 90-day tourist visa to enter Japan for tourism, business, attending conferences, and visiting friends and acquaintances.

Single-entry and multiple-entry options are available for the short-term visa. Multiple-entry visas are valid for five years, while single-entry visas are valid for three months. Please note that short-term visa validity cannot be extended.

It is essential to remember that a short-term tourism visa to Japan cannot be used for activities that generate income, such as operating a business or receiving payment.

Visa with a single entry for temporary visitors

The single-entry short-term visa or the single-entry visa for transient visitors allows Indians to enter Japan for a maximum of 90 days for tourism purposes. This category of short-term visa is effective for three months.

Documents required

The following documents are necessary to register for a tourist visa to Japan:

  • Valid passport
  • Visa application document
  • A photograph in passport dimensions
  • Slip/certificate/other documents proving reservation of air/ship boarding ticket or Information on the scheduled flight/cruise schedule with entry/departure dates to or from Japan
  • A certificate of income or tax payment issued by a public agency a certificate of deposit balance demonstrating sufficient funds to cover all expenditures incurred in Japan
  • Itinerary during the Japanese visit
  • Itinerary, hotel reservations, flyers, brochures, etc.

Please be aware that all required documents must be valid and issued within three months of the submission date. In addition, documents submitted with an application, excluding a passport, will not be returned.

Multiple-entry visa

Indian nationals who submit for a short-term multiple entry visa as temporary visitors are permitted to stay in Japan for a maximum of 90 days for tourism purposes. This category of short-term visa is valid for five (5) years.

Eligibility

Nationals of India holding an ordinary MRP (Machine Readable Passport) or e-passport compliant with ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) standards who wish to register for a multiple-entry visa and fall into one of the following categories:

A person who has travelled to Japan as a transient visitor at least twice in the past three years.

  • A person who has travelled to Japan as a transient visitor within the past three years and has sufficient funds to cover their expenses.
  • A person with a record as a transient visitor to Japan and a record as a temporary visitor to G7 countries (other than Japan) within the past three years.
  • Individuals with adequate financial means
  • Spouse or offspring of the aforementioned individuals Documents required

The following categories are required to submit the following documents:

  • Applicants who have travelled to Japan at least twice in the past three years:
  • A visa registration form that includes a photograph
  • passport (only MRP/e-passports compliant with ICAO requirements
  • A current or expired passport with a temporary visitor visa and entry markings from Japan within the past three years

Please note that registrants from outside India are required to provide documentation proving legal residency in India.

  • Applicants with Japan travel experience within the past three years
  • A visa registration form that includes a photograph
  • Passport (only MRP/e-passports compliant with ICAO requirements
  • A current or expired passport with a transient visitor visa and Japan entry stamp within the past three years
  • Tax return of the applicant (certificate of deposit balance is also permissible).

Please note that registrants from outside India are required to provide documentation proving legal residency in India.

  • Applicants with Japan and G7 travel histories within the past three years
  • A visa registration form that includes a photograph
  • passport (only MRP/e-passports compliant with ICAO requirements
  • a current or expired passport with a temporary visitor visa and entry markings from Japan and G7 countries (other than Japan) within the past three years.
  • Tax return of the applicant (certificate of deposit balance is also permissible).

Please note that registrants from outside India are required to provide documentation proving legal residency in India.

  • Applicants with adequate financial means
  • A visa registration form that includes a photograph
  • passport (only MRP/e-passports compliant with ICAO requirements)
  • applicant’s tax return to demonstrate adequate financial capability:
  • Documents such as a certificate of deposit balance, stock dividend, pension, retirement allowance, inheritance, lease agreement, real estate register, property deed, etc. are also permissible, if necessary.

Please note that registrants from outside India are required to provide documentation proving legal residency in India.

  • Spouses and offspring of the aforementioned individuals
  • A visa registration form that includes a photograph
  • passport (only MRP/e-passports compliant with ICAO requirements)
  • If the spouse or parent already possesses a multiple-entry visa as an applicant with sufficient financial capacity, a copy of his or her passport (identification pages and visa) must be submitted.
    Proof of kinship documents
  • Applicants from outside India are required to provide documentation proving legal residency in India.

Please be aware that the Embassy/Consulate General of Japan in India may request additional documents in addition to those listed above. In addition, the authorities may issue a single-entry visa following the visa examination.

Japan visitor visa Request

Residents of the jurisdiction in India, namely Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Goa, U.T of Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, can obtain a Japan tourist visa or a short-term visa from either the VFS Global visa application centre or the Consulate-General of Japan in Mumbai.

Follow the procedures below to apply for a Japan tourist visa at your local VFS Global visa application centre:

Step 1: Commence the visa application process.

When you are ready to apply for a Japan visa, download the visa application form, fill it out and complete it, print the form, and bring it along with the documents required for the short-term visa (single entry or multiple entry) to the visa application centre for submission.

Step 2: Schedule a visa interview at the visa application centre.

After completing and printing your visa application form, you must schedule an appointment at the visa application centre to submit it. After scheduling your appointment, you will receive a confirmation email along with the appointment letter.

Please note that if you are part of a family or group, you will need to schedule separate appointments for each family member or group member.

Third step: Pay your visa costs

After scheduling an appointment at the visa application centre, the visa application fee must be paid. If you download and print the form before bringing it to the visa application facility, payment can be made at the time of your scheduled appointment.

Please note that the visa fee must be paid in cash at the visa application centre.

Visit the visa application centre as the fourth step

You must submit your visa application form in its entirety at the visa application centre. Here you can locate the nearest VFS Global visa application centre.

On your scheduled appointment day, you must:

  • Arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
  • Attend the scheduled visa application appointment. Bring your visa application, two copies of your passport’s bio page, and a valid passport or travel document with at least two blank pages on each side.
  • Original and copies of all supporting documentation are required.
    Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult, who cannot be a VFS Global employee.
  • If you neglect your appointment on the scheduled date, you will be required to schedule a new appointment 24 hours after the original appointment date.

After submitting your visa application form, you will be notified via email when the visa application centre has received your decision.

Additionally, you can monitor the status of your visa application online via the VFS Global website. Simply enter your reference number and date of birth from the invoice/receipt issued by the visa application centre.

Collect your passport from the visa application centre in Step 5.

Once a decision has been made on your visa application, you may collect your passport from the visa application facility or have it returned to you by courier for an additional fee.

If collecting your passport in person, you must bring the receipt issued by the visa application centre and a form of government identification. If permitted, you may be able to send a representative to collect your passport; they must present a letter of authorization signed by you, as well as the receipt issued by the visa application centre and their government identification.

Japan tourist visa expenses and processing times

According to the Consulate-General of Japan in Mumbai, the minimum processing time for a Japan tourist visa is four business days after the application has been accepted at the visa counter.

However, it is always advisable to corroborate the processing time with the Consulate-General or the VFS Global visa application centre in order to obtain precise information.

The following are the visa fees for Japan:

  • Visa for a single entrance cost JPY 3,000 (INR 1,796)
  • Multiple-entry visa: JPY 6,000 (INR 3,592)
