Bengaluru: ASI suspended after video of cops thrashing woman goes viral

After the video of two cops physically attacking a woman out of the Kumaraswamy Layout Police Station in the district made rounds on the internet, the Assistant sub-inspector Renukaiah has been suspended.

The video that went viral, two cops can be seen forcibly pushing the woman out of the station. Tarakeshwari, a 20-year-old woman had called the police control room complaining that the family members were pushing her to go to Andhra Pradesh against her will. After she was escorted to the police station her mother, mother-in-law attacked the cops. Following this, Renukaiah and another policeman was seen allegedly thrashing two women out. The incident occurred on January 20.

Tarakeshwari, came to Bengaluru in December 2018. “My mother forcibly got me married to her younger brother when I was 11 years old. My in-laws and husband treated me like a domestic help. I wanted to live an independent life. A few of my friends are working in garment and other industrial units in the city. I decided to join them,” Tarakeshwari told police as quoted by The Times of India.

After conducting an inquiry into the case, DCP (south) K Annamalai said, “We agree that the women were in the wrong by attacking police. But ASI Renukaiah committed a bigger mistake by attacking them. He should have booked the women for assaulting police on duty”.

Calling Former Chief Minister of the state Siddaramaiah an “inspiration for hooliganism”, The BJP Karnataka Twitter handle shared the video of the incident.
