Asian heavyweights Japan and minnows Turkmenistan commence their respective campaigns of the AFC Asian Cup 2019 in Abu Dhabi. Japan and Turkmenistan are paired alongside Oman and Uzbekistan in Group F of the competition.

Japan is the most successful national team in the continental championship having won the title on four occasions. However, they have been affected by injuries recently with the likes of Shoya Nakajima and Hidemasa Morita ruled out after being named in the squad.

Turkmenistan, meanwhile, is making just their second appearance in the competition having made their debut in 2004.

For the first time ever, twenty-four nations will compete in the pan-Asian competition instead of the usual sixteen. As such two additional groups have been added and the two best teams from each group and the four best third-placed teams will progress in the tournament.
