New Delhi: A week shy of the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections 2019, Congress president Rahul Gandhi released party manifesto on Tuesday.

In its manifesto Congress party has included a section for “Rights of LGBTQIA+” community. The grand old party has promised to “immediately withdraw” the Transgender Bill, 2018, which is currently pending in the parliament. Besides, the party has instead said in its manifesto that they will drat new Bill in “consultation with the LGBTQIA+ community.” The party will introduce a Bill, consistent with the judgement in the NALSA case, if voted back to power.

In the Right to LGBTQIA section Congress said that it will “ensure effective implementation of the judgement in the Navtej Singh Johar case,” adding that it will protect the rights of the community.

Party added that they “will direct gender sensitivity training” and that it would “be made mandatory in all government departments and organisations including the Armed Forces and the Police Forces”.

The Transgenders Bill has also been strongly criticized by various leaders of the opposition as it fails to provide any reservations for the members of the community.

Speaking at the event of the release of party manifesto, P. Chidambaram, who chaired the Congress Manifesto Committee, said the manifesto “addresses the interests of farmers, industry, Dalits, minorities, workers, women”.

The Lok Sabha elections will be held in seven phases between April 11 and May 19.
