A week shy of the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections 2019, Congress president Rahul Gandhi released party manifesto on Tuesday.

The party in its manifesto devoted a section to “Digital Rights of Every Citizen”. The party takes up few of the key issues have been surrounding the digital space for the few years.

Congress talks about the net neutrality, saying that the party will uphold its principles “to ensure the internet stays a level playing field.” The grand old party will also regulate the “power to shut down the internet”, preventing arbitrary shut downs.

Party also took a stand on the “right to privacy” and promised in their manifesto that “a law to protect the personal data of all persons” will be passed.

Further, it promised to pass law to put safeguards against “excessive surveillance and monitoring” and that they will make the government departments to publish all non-private data, allowing citizens to access the data without filing an RTI.

Lastly, the party takes up the issue of fake news and promises that it will stop the spread of the same, and punishing “those who misuse digital and social media.
