BJP candidates CP Radhakrishnan and state functionary Vanathi Srinivasan of Coimbatore were among the 200 odd people whose Facebook accounts were taken down after a complaint of violation of model code of conduct.

Radhakrishnan’s account was however recovered after BJP IT came in action but Vanathi’s account is yet to be reactivated.

BJP IT wing president that those opponents had mobilized mass complaints against these accounts by paying money.  Social media platforms have algorithms that red flag and take down accounts after receiving a large number of complaints.

He also said that his own account was frozen for three days. Also, 2000 Twitter handles of BJP sympathizers have been taken down and he had 5 lakh followers. This has come as a blow to the party.

The constituency of Kanyakumari had about 100 active FB accounts that have an average following of 50,000 each and that is the affected in a worse manner for BJP.

BJP IT wing insiders said that they brought several new SIM cards to create accounts in compensation for the blocked accounts.

The major Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu said on the issue that none of their official FB accounts were taken down. The DMK”s IT wing head said that they have authorized pages for each district units apart from the account of senior party leaders, party HQ, and IT wing.

AIADMK’s IT wing also revealed that none of the party’s official account was taken down.
