Kashi Vishwanath Corridor: To enhance the state of Assam’s tourism industry, the Maa Kamakhya Divyalok Pariyojana, alternatively referred to as the Maa Kamakhya Access Corridor, is currently under construction in New Delhi. As reported, the restoration of six prominent temples within the Kamakhya complex is intended to enhance Shaktipeeth’s ‘darshan’ experience and stimulate the tourism industry. The Maa Kamakhya Divyalok Pariyojana may emulate the Varanasi Kashi-Vishwanath Temple Corridor.

The Kashi Vishwanath Temple Corridor is what?

The Kashi Vishwanath Temple, located in Varanasi, is among the most numerous temples in India. Vishwanath and Vishweshwara are the deities worshipped in the temple, which is home to one of the twelve Jyotirlinga sanctuaries. The temple has suffered destruction multiple times throughout history. Thousands of devotees visit it daily.

Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, initiated the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor initiative in 2019. Prime Minister Modi conducted a sacred ceremony to consecrate the corridor on December 13, 2021. The corridor links the Kashi Vishwanath temple with several Varanasi ghats. Previously, pilgrims had to navigate through narrow lanes and congested roads to reach the Ghats from the temple. Traversing the Ganges River between the temple and the ghats has created additional space, preventing congestion.

The expenditure to conclude the initial phase of the corridor project was Rs 339 crore. The corridor incorporates a total of 23 buildings and encompasses an area of 5 lakh square feet. These structures provide accommodation for the devotees of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Additionally, they also house the Mumukshu Bhavan, Vedic Kendra, Yatri Suvidha Kendras, Bhogshala, City Museum, Viewing Gallery, and Food Court, among other facilities.

The estimated overall expenditure for project completion was approximately Rs 800 crore. Along the corridor are located the Rudrakash Convention Centre, an art gallery, and a multipurpose pre-function area, in addition to meeting rooms and a capacity of 1200 individuals.

Approximately 1,400 businesses and residents in the corridor’s vicinity received compensation from the government for their displacement. We uncovered and repaired over forty ruined temples, such as Manokameshwar, Gangeshwar, Shri Kumbha, and Jauvinayak. The corridor has made it easier for devotees to immerse themselves in the Ganges, collect their water, and bring it to Kashi Vishwanath.
