MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL OPENING DAY ACTIVITIES

Attend a game, obviously

If your local ballpark is hosting a game, you should attend. Opening Day is unlike any other experience, and it must be experienced to be believed. No stadium? No problem. Watch your favourite team on television, or better yet, travel to your favourite sports bar to enjoy the camaraderie.

Don a bonnet

Every year, MLB encourages fans to don their team’s cap on Opening Day, regardless of their ability to attend a game. Therefore, don your favourite hat and demonstrate team spirit!

Cook up some hot sausages

Make it a genuine celebration and eat as if you were there. Prepare hot dogs by boiling them, steaming the buns, grabbing a chilled beer, and snacking on peanuts. Remember the condiments: mustard, ketchup, relish, and scallions.

Five CRACKER JACK FACTS THAT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND

They date from 1872

In 1872, Frederick Rueckheim started selling popcorn from a waggon in Chicago. Immigrants from Germany, he and his brother modified the popcorn to make it stand out. The invention of Cracker Jacks was a success at the 1893 World’s Fair.

The packaging was the clincher.

They were one of the first companies to use wax-sealed cardboard containers, enabling nationwide distribution of their product.

coupons, not prizes, were initially discovered inside

In the early days of Cracker Jacks, coupons were included in the boxes instead of the rewards we enjoy today. These vouchers could be collected and redeemed for an assortment of products. (like jewelry and housewares).

Cracker Jack baseball cards are quite valuable.

In 1914 and 1915, Cracker Jack sold baseball card decks. Own one? Today, a complete set of these cards is worth up to $100,000, and each card is worth up to $40,000.

Although the name Cracker Jack was registered in 1896, the mascots were not introduced until 1916.

The child depicted on the box is Sailor Jack, accompanied by his dog Bingo. Sailor Jack is modelled after Frederick’s grandson.

WHY WE LOVE MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL OPENING DAY

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1969

50 years ago, one of baseball’s greatest comebacks occurred when the “miracle” New York Mets won the 1969 World Series after seven disastrous seasons.

It’s almost a national holiday.

In 2014, Budweiser and Ozzie Smith initiated a petition to make Opening Day a national holiday. It didn’t succeed, but we agree. Why shouldn’t we all have a day off to experience the most popular American pastime?

The pageantry is seductive.

While each baseball city appears to have its own unique Opening Day celebration, Cincinnati’s parade is the oldest. Since 1920, the Findlay Market Parade has been conducted annually.
