Manipur: Supreme Court dismisses former VC Yugindro's SLP

Imphal: The Supreme Court has dismissed the special leave petition (SLP) filed by former Manipur University (MU) Vice-Chancellor professor K Yugindro Singh challenging the order passed by High Court (HC) of Manipur of his suspension from the post of pro-vice-chancellor of the MU on Tuesday.

The order was passed by the division bench of the apex court said, “The order impugned in the special leave petition being an interim order, we are not inclined to interfere.”

Two Public Interest Litigations (PIL) were filed by the social activists Chongtham Nimai, Huiyen Lanpao editor, and Hemantakumar Ningomba who sought court’s intervention to bring back the normalcy in the Manipur University.

Following the PIL, on October 11, the HC passed an order to suspend K Yugindro from the post of pro-vice-chancellor. The situation is back to normal at Manipur University now.

Manipur University was on the boil over 100 days and witnessed a major violence and police brutality against students and teachers was restored after the High Court suspended Yugindro from Pro VC post.

Yugindro Singh was appointed as the acting vice-chancellor after Vice Chancellor AP Pandey was suspended over allegations of financial irregularities, which triggered massive students’ movements which were also supported by the teaching staffs of the University.

Hundreds of students and professors were arrested from the Manipur University campus and it witnessed the fierce crackdown by the police.

The agitation by Manipur University Students Union  (MUSU), Manipur University Teachers Association (MUTA) and Manipur University Staffs Association (MUSA) had brought the functioning of the university to a standstill.
