Mizoram: Govt may postpone polls amidst the objection over CEO appointment

Aizwal: Amidst the ongoing controversy over the appointment of Mizoram’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), the government is expected to change the polling date in the state to December 7.

As per government sources, the final decision will be made by the Election Commission (EC) in coordination with the state government.

State Assembly Election in Mizoram is scheduled on November 28.

The EC had ordered the removal of Chuaungo on November 1, after the state CEO S B Shashank complained to the poll panel of “direct interference” by the state government on October 29.

Chuaungo’s removal has sparked a major outrage in the state ahead of scheduled elections. Civil society groups and political parties had protested against the CEO Shashank.

Chief Minister Lal Thanhawala earlier wrote to Prime Minister Modi demanding Shashank’s removal from his post.

Sources in the government have said that a decision on Shashank’s replacement would be taken soon.
