HISTORY OF NATIONAL BEER DAY
It is easy to understand why beer is the most widely consumed alcoholic beverage on the planet. It is available in countless varieties, flavours, and proofs. Beer has been consumed for millennia; scientists have discovered evidence of its production dating back to 7,000 BCE. Ancient Mesopotamians composed poems about it and considered it evidence of the existence of the divine. It was utilised in numerous ancient Egyptian religious ceremonies. Monks in mediaeval Europe brewed beer in their monasteries, elevating brewing to an art form. Only water and tea are consumed more frequently than beer today, and more than 35 billion gallons of beer are produced annually across the globe.
National Beer Day commemorates the 1933 signing of the Cullen-Harrison Act, which repealed the prohibition on beer sales in the United States. In 2009, a Virginian named Justin Smith created his own unofficial National Beer Day to commemorate this historic date. Since then, it has been officially recognised by the state of Virginia and unofficially by millions of beer enthusiasts throughout the country.
One of the best things about beer is the abundance of available varieties. IPAs, Pilsners, Stouts, and Sours, to name a few. Typically, the alcohol content of beer ranges between 4-7% ABV, so you can enjoy a cold one on a hot summer day without fear of becoming intoxicated.
