National Day of Reason 2023: Annually, National Day of Reason is observed on the first Thursday of May. It is a secular, lawful holiday in the United States that was created in response to the National Day of Prayer. This holiday is for everyone who does not believe in God or a formal religion. The purpose of this day is to provide a positive, inclusive alternative to the National Day of Prayer, while promoting the separation of church and state. This day is also intended to foster community among nonreligious Americans.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL DAY OF REASON

Various days have been designated for prayer and religious observances since the beginning of time. People called for prayer, fasting, and expressions of gratitude.

This is the origin of the National Day of Prayer. President Harry S. Truman established this religious holiday in 1952, during which people are encouraged to pray and meditate. Nonetheless, as religions diverged from previously established paths, an inclusive ideology gained traction. Many Americans did not believe in any religion and therefore were unable to celebrate this holiday. Thus, our special occasion was established.

The American Humanist Association and the Washington Area Secular Humanists collaborated to establish a secular holiday for atheists, humanists, secularists, and others who are unable to observe the National Day of Prayer.

While the celebrations (and their popularity) have grown gradually over time, an increasing number of local and state governments now recognise this day.

Blood drives, secular events and activities, and in some instances, protests against the National Day of Prayer have been observed. This day has also received support from legislators such as the mayor of Omaha, Nebraska, Jean Stothert, who signed a proclamation in support of the National Day of Reason, and Pete Stark, who supported the day in the House.

These events occur during the Secular Week of Action, a time when individuals volunteer to better the world.
