NATIONAL FLAPJACK DAY’S BACKGROUND

But why is it known as flapjack? The name developed in England in the 1600s, with the ‘flap’ in flapjack referring to the flipping of the pancake to evenly bake both sides. Aside from historical records, archaeological evidence indicates that breakfast cakes were eaten even during the prehistoric period. They are most likely the first and most popular breakfast cereal in civilization.

The popular snack is referred to differently in different locations. In North America, it is known as a granola bar, and in some areas of England, it is known as a pancake. Some people refer to it as ‘hotcakes,’ particularly when served in stacks with whipped cream and butter layered in between. Some people name it ‘griddle cake,’ because it is commonly cooked on an oiled griddle.

Flapjacks pair well with a hot cup of coffee and are popular among city and town dwellers as a way to fuel up for the workweek. Since 2020, the United States has celebrated National Flapjack Day on March 7 to honour the delicious breakfast cake that has satiated humanity for centuries.
