The 10th of April is National Siblings Day, in honour of the fact that siblings are a vital part of our lives and a vital part of our family. The occasion is also referred to as “World Siblings Day.” Siblings are our best friends and sometimes our worst enemies. Our siblings encourage us to strive for excellence, embarrass us, and serve as our greatest motivators and rivals. It is now becoming a national day of commemoration and celebration. Three U.S. presidents have acknowledged the event, with President Obama being the most recent in 2016. In 1999, the “Siblings Day Foundation,” which sponsors this day, received non-profit status. They are working to establish an International Siblings Day resolution at the United Nations.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL SIBLINGS DAY

Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival that celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. During Raksha Bandhan, Hindu women tie a band around the wrists of their brothers to symbolise their protection. The brothers exchange gifts and agree to protect and care for one another. Despite its antiquity, the festival is still widely celebrated; it is the earliest known celebration of siblings!

After losing her brother and sister at a young age, Claudia Evart founded the American holiday in 1995. She realised the significance of siblings in our lives and therefore created the holiday to honour their memory. Claudia chose April 10, the birthday of her late sister Lisette, for the holiday. Mother’s Day has existed since 1907, while Father’s Day dates back to 1910. This marks nearly a century without a day to honour our siblings!

Claudia established the “Siblings Day Foundation,” whose mission of honouring our siblings continues to spread. The foundation is working to make the holiday federally recognised in the United States and is collaborating with the United Nations to establish an International Siblings Day. Since 1998, 49 states have issued gubernatorial proclamations to observe this day on April 10; three presidents of the United States have acknowledged the holiday.

Australia, India, and Spain are among the many nations that celebrate Siblings Day. National Siblings Day is observed as Brothers and Sisters Day on May 31 in Europe. Even the President of the Portuguese Republic has recognised Siblings Day as a holiday!

Behind every custom is a fascinating tale. National Siblings Day customs vary from person to person. The day’s festivities include sibling rivalries, inside jokes, and experiences that only siblings can relate to. Later in life, these memories become traditions, such as recreating a childhood recipe, bringing out photo albums with baby pictures, visiting significant locations, and giving each other bizarre nicknames.

Despite the fact that siblings frequently feel stifled by one another, brothers and sisters spend more time together on this day. They dine at their favourite restaurant, take drives, visit an arcade to relive childhood memories, and engage in other activities to demonstrate their genuine affection for one another without becoming overly sentimental.
