The modern waffles we appreciate today originated in France and Belgium. Ancient Greeks created the first waffles from grain flour and water. During that time, obelios, or flat cakes, were prepared between heated metal plates. During the Middle Ages, round platters depicting Jesus, The Crucifiction, and other religious scenes and symbols were used to create wafers. Both the ingredients and culinary methods for waffles have evolved over the centuries, culminating in one of the dozens of popular varieties we enjoy today.
The Belgian Waffle arrived in the United States during the 1962 World’s Fair in Seattle, but it did not gain widespread popularity until the 1964 to 1965 World’s Fair in Queens, New York. Originally, the waffle was known as the Brussels waffle. It is characterised by a pristine exterior and a light, airy, and fluffy interior. It was served plain as well as with whipped cream and strawberry slices. No one was particularly drawn to the “Brussels Waffle,” but the family selling them in Queens recognised that the name was to blame. As soon as they advertised it as a Belgian waffle, consumer interest and demand increased.
Waffle Day originated in Sweden when the words for waffles and “Our Lady’s Day” were confused. It is celebrated by eating waffles in several European countries on March 25 and represents the beginning of spring.
