The auspicious nine-day festival, Sharad Navratri has begun. The festival is celebrated for different reasons with different rituals across the various parts of the Indian cultural sphere. The festival may be celebrated in different ways in different parts of the country, but what remains prevalent is the folk song and recitation for Goddess Durga.

In this episode, the popular folk singer Maithili Thakur is back again with her phenomenal singing. Well, this time as the Navratri season has already begun, the 20-year-old singer has recited the famous Mahishasur Mardini Stotra ‘Aigiri Nandini’.

Aigiri Nandini stands for ‘one who is angry with the progeny of Danu (demon), one who is angry.’ It was originally composed by Adi Shankaracharya and written by Birendra Krishna Bhadra. It was popularized in the middle ages by Ramakrishna a devotee of Mahakali and courtier of Raja Krishna Devarayaa. The Mahishasur Mardini Stotra is in Marathi language.

The Indian classical singer, Maithil Thakur, with her two brothers Rishav and Ayachi is trained in Indian Classical music. She sings in Maithili and Bhojpuri languages, along with a variety of other covers, and traditional folk music from other states.

Thakur first appeared in 2011 in  Little Champs, on Zee TV. Four years later, she contested in Indian Idol Junior, telecast on Sony TV. She won the “I Genius Young Singing Star” competition in 2016, following which she launched her album, Ya Rabba.
