Netflix’s Strategy Revealed: Netflix has unveiled a two-pronged strategy to accelerate its revenue growth, including the introduction of a subscription tier with advertisements and a restriction on password sharing. Recently, the video-streaming platform reached out to its subscribers in India, imploring them not to share their passwords with non-household members, a prevalent practise in the country.

Netflix’s Strategy Revealed: How They Plan to Detect Password Sharing in India

According to Netflix’s announcement, a single account is intended for use within a single household, allowing all household members access to the service at home, on the go, or on vacation. To improve the user experience, the company has implemented “Transfer Profile” and “Manage Access and Devices” features.

Netflix will now only permit users on the same Internet connection to access a particular account in order to enforce the new policies. Any user who is not a member of a “Netflix Household” will be denied access to the restricted content. Users with borrowed accounts will be logged out and given instructions on how to create a new account.

The platform intends to use data such as IP addresses, device identifiers, and account activity to determine whether a device is associated with a particular household. The company specified that it will not use users’ GPS data for this purpose.

To comply with these adjustments, Netflix has requested that subscribers review their signed-in devices and sign out of any unauthorised devices. Additionally, subscribers who share their credentials must now transfer them to new accounts. The transferred individuals will need to purchase a new subscription plan.

Netflix offers four monthly subscription plans in India, including a mobile-only plan for 149, a basic plan for 199, a standard plan for 499, and a premium tier for 699 per month. The premium plan permits streaming on up to four devices simultaneously.
