Nevruz Day 2023: Nevruz Day occurs annually on March 22 and signifies the beginning of spring and the Persian New Year. In various nations, ‘Nevruz’ (‘New Day’) may be rendered differently and celebrated on varying dates. The origin of the term “Nevruz” is Persian. It combines the words ‘nev’ (fresh) and ‘ruz’ (day).
HISTORY OF NEVRUZ DAY
According to the ancient Persian calendar, ‘Nevruz’ is the Persian word for the first day of the year and the start of spring. Although it is commonly known as the Persian New Year, it predates the Persian Empire and may extend back 3,000 years to Sumerian and Babylonian cultures.
Nevruz begins on the spring equinox, which occurs between March 20 and 21, when the days and nights are of equal duration and longer days herald warmer weather.
According to Albanian mythology, God created the universe, the sun, and mankind on this day. When the legendary Albanian sovereign Kiyumers ascended to the throne, he called for a massive celebration. On this day, Jemshid, a symbol of magnificence in Albania, also ascended to the throne. In addition, Jem, the seventh grandson of Prophet Adam, appeared in Azerbaijan on March 21 and proclaimed it a day of celebration.
On the night of Nevruz, all creatures were said to submit to God and all wishes were granted. On the holiday of Nevruz, the foremost astrologer would present the new calendar to the sultan and receive charity.
Nevruz, also referred to as ‘Nevruz-i Sultan,’ ‘Sultan Nevruz,’ ‘Navrz,’ and ‘Mart dokuzu,’ is commemorated in a variety of ways across Anatolia. It is also a ritual of affluence in regions where agriculture is the primary occupation. In Alawite-Bektashi communities, it has religious significance as well. In Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tatarstan, the Uygur region, Anatolia, and the Balkans, Nevruz is celebrated.
