Nauryz Day 2023: Nauryz Day is celebrated beginning on March 21, and it honours both the spring equinox and the renewal of nature. Nauryz, which means “new day,” has been celebrated for centuries across the Great Steppes. Nauryz symbolises generosity and wealth, happiness, love, and amazing friendships because it is celebrated by numerous cultures. During Nauryz ceremonies, previous transgressions are forgiven and forgotten, and everyone endeavours to leave all ill will behind in order to usher in the New Year with fresh beginnings.
HISTORY OF NAURYZ DAY
Nauryz is an ancient holiday that has been celebrated for over five thousand years by numerous cultures. After enduring a harsh winter, the discovery that the days were becoming longer than the nights on the steppes’ exposed plains must have been a welcome respite for the local tribes.
In 1926, Kazakhstan became a member of the Soviet Union. Observing Nauryz was prohibited because the government could not tolerate any references to the ethnic or traditional heritage, as it was deemed detrimental to the development of a pure Marxist state and Soviet ethnicity.
Nauryz was reinstated as a holiday in 1988, just prior to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and was officially recognised by presidential decree on March 15, 1991. Since then, it has regained its status as Kazakhstan’s most prominent and well-attended celebration.
As with other spring celebrations around the globe, traditional practises focus on renewal, rebirth, and a new beginning. Common services include house cleaning, debt settlement, and absolution of prior offences.
Today’s festivities are a mixture of old and new, spanning from lavish meals to rock concerts. It seems that anything goes during Nauryz celebrations, with the general rule being that the more flamboyant, the better.
