Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has resigned as Bihar chief minister on Wednesday evening amidst high political drama.

Kumar has submitted his resignation to Governor, Keshari Nath Tripathi. The decision to quit was taken by him at a meeting of JDU MLAs on Wednesday evening.

The JD(U) patriarch was under pressure to act against his deputy chief minister, Tejaswi Yadav and the leader of his coalition party, the RJD, after the CBI began probe into corruption charges against him.

Talking to reporters after tendering his resignation, the Bihar chief minister said that he had quit in the ‘interest of Bihar’. He said he never demanded anybody’s resignation but wanted Lalu and Tejashwi to come clean on allegations levelled against them by the CBI in the benami case.

“I tried to do whatever was possible in 20 months. In this atmosphere it was not possible for me to work in the alliance,” Kumar further stated.
