Punjab: Murder convict serving life imprisonment gets married inside Patiala jail

In a first, a man serving life imprisonment for a double murder, got married to his fiancée in a traditional ceremony inside Nabha Central Jail, Punjab, on Wednesday, October 30, 2019.

Mandeep Singh was convicted for a double murder where he allegedly gunned down a village Sarpanch and his gunman. He was initially supposed to get married to his fiancée Pawandeep Kaur on December 21, 2016. However, the denial of his parole prevented it from happening.

Punjab and Haryana high court (HC) denied parole to Mandeep but asked the  jail administration to make arrangements for his wedding inside the jail. Following orders, Authorities at Nabha maximum security jail arranged a priest to solemnise the wedding.

“The decision for this marriage has come directly from the Haryana and Punjab High Courts. The wedding took place in the Gurdwara Sahib in the jail campus,” Nabha jail Superintendent Ramanjeet Singh Bhangu was quoted as saying by media reports.

The court asked Nabha jail to allocate staff quarters within the jail premises to the families of the bride and the bridegroom for six hours, so that they would complete all rituals of wedding inside the gurudwara on the jail premises.

Unlike other weddings in which the bridegroom arrives at the venue, it was the bride all dressed in a bright red dress, who reached the main gates of the jail around 9am on Wednesday and went inside along with her family to marry Mandeep, who had been released from the barracks for six hours to get married
