RAC and Tatkal Cancellation Refund: Indian Railways is changing its ticket cancellation refund rules from April 2026. The new system is being brought in to deal with last-minute cancellations and to reduce misuse by agents. The changes will start in two phases from April 1 and April 15, 2026. Under the new rule, the time slabs for refunds are being changed, so many passengers may get back less money than before if they cancel late. The Railway Ministry said the old 48-hour, 12-hour and 4-hour windows have now been changed to 72 hours, 24 hours and 8 hours.

This means the best refund will now be available only when a person cancels the ticket more than 72 hours before the train leaves. In that case, the passenger will get the highest refund after a flat cancellation charge is cut. Earlier, this bigger refund window was available up to 48 hours before departure. So now people will need to cancel even earlier if they want to lose less money.

Late Cancellation will Cost More Money

One big change is about the no-refund period. Earlier, if a confirmed reserved ticket was cancelled less than 4 hours before the train left, or after chart preparation, there was no refund. Now this no-refund limit has been made much stricter. From April, if a passenger cancels in less than 8 hours before the train’s departure, no refund will be given. That is a major change and it will affect people who cancel at the last moment.

The other refund slabs are also changing.

  • If a person cancels between 72 hours and 24 hours before departure, then 25% of the fare will be cut.
  • If the ticket is cancelled between 24 hours and 8 hours before departure, then 50% of the fare will be cut.
  • Under the older rule, 25% used to be deducted if the ticket was cancelled between 48 hours and 12 hours before departure.
  • 50% used to be deducted if the cancellation happened between 12 hours and 4 hours before departure.

So now the stricter cuts will apply for a longer time.

RAC and Tatkal Rules Stay the Same

There is no new change for RAC and Tatkal cancellation rules. Railways is keeping those rules as they are. If a confirmed Tatkal ticket is cancelled, no refund will be given. In cases of contingent cancellation or waitlisted Tatkal tickets, the old deduction rules will continue. Partial cancellation of Tatkal e-tickets is still allowed.

For RAC e-tickets too, the rule stays the same. If the passenger does not cancel the ticket or does not file a TDR online up to 30 minutes before the train’s scheduled departure, then no refund will be allowed. So while the big refund slabs for regular reserved tickets are changing, RAC and Tatkal passengers will mostly see the old rules continue.
