Roblox Launches New Licensing Tool, Teams Up With Netflix and Lionsgate

Roblox launched a new licensing tool letting creators use popular characters from Netflix, Lionsgate, and more. With this move, it aims to boost earnings and expand beyond gaming into media.

Roblox New Licensing Tool: Roblox has come up with a big new feature that will let creators use characters and worlds from famous shows and movies in their games. This new thing is called a licensing feature and it lets people who own characters, like companies, give permission for others to add those characters into games on Roblox. It’s a big step for the company, especially because Roblox wants to make itself more than just a gaming platform.

More Money for Creators

Roblox is already a popular place where young people play games, talk with friends, and even shop. In 2024, people who made games and content on Roblox earned around $923 million, which is more than the $741 million they made the year before.

The company believes creators will earn over $1 billion this year. Roblox says its goal is “to have 10% of all gaming content revenue flowing through the Roblox ecosystem and benefiting our community.” That’s what Manuel Bronstein, the company’s Chief Product Officer, said, reported Reuters.

He also said, “This will require having a wide range of experiences and giving creators the opportunity to partner with rights holders of the most recognizable IP.”

Roblox already worked with companies like Warner Bros Discovery in the past for special game events and ads. Now they’re pushing this idea even further. With this new licensing feature, known as License Manager, creators won’t have to wait months to get permission from big companies.

Roblox says they’ll be able to get licenses in just days or even hours. The License Manager helps rights holders register their characters and lets game makers find and use them easily. More companies will be added throughout the year, and Roblox wants to let all eligible IP holders join in soon. They’re also thinking about adding different kinds of licenses too.

Big Media Partners

Some big names have already partnered with Roblox for this feature. Netflix is one of them, so now developers can use characters and names from popular shows like “Stranger Things” and “Squid Game” in the games they build. Other partners include Lionsgate, Sega, and the Japanese company Kodansha, which is famous for its manga and anime.

Lionsgate’s Executive Vice President & Head of Global Products and Experiences, Jenefer Brown, said, “Roblox offers a unique and dynamic platform for our fans to connect with beloved franchises in interactive and personal ways.” She added, “We’re excited to engage with the Roblox creator community and can’t wait to see the innovative experiences they bring to life with our IP.”

Yoshinobu Noma, who is the President and CEO of Kodansha, also shared how happy they are about this partnership. He said, “The creativity of the Roblox community is truly inspiring, and we are thrilled to offer our popular manga, novels, and their anime adaptations to creators through a new form of licensing.” He added, “This partnership allows us to deepen our connection with fans and explore new storytelling avenues within immersive experiences, in line with our global purpose: Inspire Impossible Stories.”
