Rohtak: 60-year-old woman stampeded to death during free ration distribution; two booked

A 60-year-old woman identified as Guddi Devi was killed during a stampede at a function organised to distribute free ration to poor in Rohtak town of Haryana on Sunday evening. Another woman, identified as Murti Devi of Gohana road in Rohtak, sustained injuries and was admitted to PGIMS Rohtak for treatment.

A magisterial inquiry has been ordered apart from an FIR against the organisers, who run an Ayurveda hospital in the town.

Sourced said that the incident took place about 4 pm on Sunday when thousands had gathered to collect subsidised packed ration to be handed out by organisers. Rohtak MP Deepender Hooda was the chief guest of the event, organised by local Congress leader Mohit Dhanwantri. Hooda had, however, left the venue when the stampede occurred.

According to the reports, Guddi rushed to take the ration from the camp but due to lack of space and poor arrangements, she fell in the crowd. An iron grill also hit her during the stampede following which she suffered serious injuries, but no one came to her rescue as the people continued to vie for food items. She died on the spot.

Reportedly, an FIR has been registered on the complaint of the family of the victim, against Dhanwantri hospital owner Mohit Dhanwantri and his father S Dhanwantri on the complaint of Kapil Kumar, deceased’s son. Rajkumar Dhanwantri, the younger brother of the accused S Dhanwantri, claimed that they regularly distribute subsidised foodgrains to poor who cannot afford them.
