SAAM Day of Action History
The National Sexual Violence Resource Center (N.S.V.R.C) initiated the observance of SAAM Day of Action in 2004. “To provide leadership in preventing and responding to sexual violence through collaboration, resource sharing and creation, and research promotion” is the mission of the center. “A world where diversity is celebrated, all individuals are treated with dignity and respect and have complete autonomy over their bodies and sexual expression,” is their vision.
The primary objective of SAAM Day of Action is to proactively address the issues of sexual assault, abuse, and harassment, while also offering assistance and support to survivors. Sexual assault encompasses any form of sexual contact or activity that is executed without the victim’s assent. Sexual assault includes rape, attempted rape, sexual coercion, coercive contact or fondling, and other similar acts. Non-physical acts, such as displaying sexual images to a person without their consent, are also included. Sexual assault is a grave offense that demands appropriate legal action.
Survivors frequently experience profound and enduring consequences, including but not limited to post-traumatic stress disorder, anger, denial, nightmares, humiliation, dread, depression, guilt, rationalization, mood swings, numbness, promiscuity, loneliness, social anxiety, and lack of trust. Therefore, it is abjectly clear that survivors of sexual assault should be accorded compassion and assistance rather than condemnation, stigmatization, and victim-shaming. Additionally, therapy and counseling are necessary to facilitate their recovery and treatment.
