National Sexual Assault Awareness Month’s Day of Action 2024 (US): The Day of Action for Sexual Assault Awareness Month is observed annually on the initial Tuesday of April. It is observed on April 2 this year. The day promotes sexual assault awareness. Through education, sexual assault, harassment, and abuse are to be prevented.

The instruction of consent and the understanding of boundaries are both vital. The day raises awareness about critical instruments that can assist in altering cultural perspectives via social media campaigns, events, and other means. The day provides strategies to assist victims throughout the month and beyond.

The History of the National Sexual Assault Awareness Month Action Day

Anti-sexual violence efforts and public consciousness in the United States increased dramatically during the 1970s, mirroring the decade-long surge in social engagement. In 1971, the Bay Area Women Against Rape established the nation’s inaugural rape crisis center, which not only raised awareness but also delivered immediate care to victims. Since 1976, women have participated in Take Back the Night marches as a coordinated demonstration against rape and sexual assault. Ultimately, these endeavors coalesced into a movement that swept throughout the United States and Europe. There were a greater number of actions taken to raise awareness about violence against women as a consequence of this campaign.

Campaigners utilized the month of October in the early 1980s to bring attention to violence against women, with domestic abuse awareness becoming the primary focus. During the late 1980s, the National Coalition Against Sexual Assault (N.C.A.S.A.) surveyed state sexual assault coalitions informally to determine the most suitable date for a nationwide Sexual Assault Awareness Week. During the late 1990s, a multitude of proponents initiated the coordination of events and programs for the entire month of April to garner national recognition to raise awareness and prevent sexual violence. The nationwide detection of SAAM commenced in April 2001.

Written and enacted in 1994, the Violence Against Women Act united state coalitions, activists, and victims. In 2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in collaboration with the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape, established the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. The N.S.V.R.C. organized the first nationwide Sexual Assault Awareness Month campaign in 2001.
