This week, a man from South Australia perished of the rare meningococcal disease after being rushed to an Adelaide hospital.

Luke Wingfield, 36, awoke with a fever on Tuesday and was carried to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where he passed away on Wednesday evening.

The deceased’s sister, Tania Wingfield, compared the event to a “bad dream.”

“It just breaks my heart along with my parents and siblings,” Tania told Seven News.

“Right now it feels like nothing more than a bad nightmare we cannot escape,” he said.

“Is this actually occurring? “Has he really left?”

Tania reported that her sibling was healthy and a nonsmoker, and that his initial symptoms resembled those of influenza.

She stated, “He took care of himself, was into fitness, ate well, didn’t smoke, and didn’t do drugs.”

Meningococcal disease is an uncommon bacterial illness characterised by fever, headache, neck stiffness, joint discomfort, and rash.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, between 1997 and 2016, the disease was responsible for the deaths of 396 individuals, 95 percent of whom were children.

Luke’s sibling, Lee Wingfield, urged people to remain vigilant.

“Seek medical attention immediately,” Lee instructed.

He advised, “Don’t play around with this; it’s too dangerous.”

Several individuals close to Luke reportedly received antibiotics as a precaution.

On Saturday, Luke’s cousin, Matthew Coulthard, debuted for Richmond at the MCG while wearing a black armband as a poignant tribute to Luke.
