She happened upon a spate of suicides among gay adolescents that were bullied and were extensively publicized. She was moved by the news and resolved to take action in order to raise awareness regarding the tragic loss of these pupils. Her intention was to provide assistance to individuals who were experiencing comparable challenges.

She was inspired by Canada’s Pink Shirt Day, which is an initiative to combat bullying, to create a Tumblr that encouraged students to don purple in support of L.G.B.T.Q adolescents. Because the hue purple symbolizes spirit on the Pride Flag, she opted for it.

Her diligence and resolve led to the inaugural Spirit Day commemoration taking place on October 20, 2010.
