Srinagar: ‘Suspicious’ man with gun lynched outside Jamia Mosque

A man was lynched by a mob as he was caught clicking pictures of people coming out of Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area of Old City in Srinagar on late Thursday night. However, the identity of the person could not be discovered.

Reportedly, the incident took place when Shab-e-Qadr prayers were in progress in the historic mosque. The mob became apprehensive of this person and tried to find out his identity. However, in panic, the person fired at them from his pistol that caused injury to three civilians.

Notably, Hurriyat chairman and Valley’s head priest the Mirwaiz was inside the mosque and delivering his sermon when the incident took place. The injured have been identified as Danish Mir, Mudasir Ahmad and Sajad Ahmad Bhat. All three were hospitalized.

Post the incident, the angry mob went on a rage targeting vacant security pickets set up in the area. Police reinforcement was rushed in to restore normality.

A body which was lying in Nowhatta was recovered and his identity is being ascertained. “We have checked the man does not belong to the police department, further investigations are underway”, said a police officer to Kashmir Reader.
