In India, a ration card is a proof of citizenship for the access of food and basic requirements at reasonable rates by the Public Distribution System for the people.

A valid citizen of India can apply for a ration card through a few steps. The Ration card is considered to be a food coupon similar to the western countries. Ration card is also used as proof of applying for making a Domicile certificate, Birth certificate, Voter ID card, etc.

Ration Card was among the most desired ID proofs/documents of citizenship until the Aadhaar Card came. As a citizen (whether tax-payer or otherwise) of a country, the Ration card was and is the equivalent of a food coupon that the western countries’ social security no provides to its citizens.

Ration card is also used as proof of applying for making a Domicile certificate, Birth certificate, Voter ID card, etc.  Here is how to apply for a Ration Card.

Amid the coronavirus lockdown, many schemes have been implemented by the central and state government to provide relief to the farmers and laborers given the lockdown crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic across the country. Here are simple steps to apply for a ration card physically:

  1. Visit the official website of FCCPD, Maharashtra i.e. http://mahafood.gov.in.
  2. Click on the “Download” link given on the left side of the homepage.
  3. Click on “Form 1: Application for new ration card” link.
  4.  Application form will appear.
  5. Citizens can check the application details.
  6. Citizens have to download and print it
  7. Now, they have to fill the application forms with all the correct details.
  8. Candidates have to attach all the important documents with the application form.
  9. Lastly, they have to physically submit the application form to the concerned department.

Here are the simple steps to apply for a ration card online:

  1. Go to aaplesarkar.mahaonline.gov.in and signing with your details
  2. Scroll down and click on “Food & Public Distribution System” in the ‘Services’ column.
  3. Upload the PDF of the necessary documents, Click on “Apply”
  4. And continue the procedure of filling the form.
  5. Download and Print the e-coupon of the ration card.

Who can apply for a ration card?

Any person who is a bonafide citizen of India can apply for the Ration Card. Children below 18 years of age (minors) are included in their parents’ card. However, anyone who is above 18 years of age can apply for a separate Ration Card.

What documents are required?

  • Aadhaar card
  • Employee identity card
  • Voter ID
  • Passport
  • Any government-issued identity card
  • Health card (including the Aaragoyasri card)
  • Driving license
