Telangana: Youth caught roasting monitor lizard alive, held

In yet another incident of animal cruelty, a 21-year-old youth has been arrested by the forest and police officials from the Narsingi forest area of Papannapet, for allegedly roasting a monitor lizard.

In a video that was posted on Instagram, a youth could be seen roasting a monitor lizard alive. The youth could also be seen talking to two persons. The video was shared on the internet on Friday and it went viral on social media.

Forest and Wildlife Protection Society had tweeted the video tagging IT and Industries Minister, KT Rama Rao, DGP, P Mahender Reddy, and several other key officials.

The location was identified as Edupayala riverbed area with the help of the video that went viral. Medak divisional forest officer M Padmaja Rani said the accused was traced to a village in Papannapet sector of the forest area.

Senior IFS officer Mohan Chandra Pargane told that forest officials in Medak district were alerted late Friday. “By 1.30 pm on Saturday, the man was arrested,” he said.

As per the reports by The Times of India, the accused told the forest officials that he caught the Monitor Lizard in the forest area and he belongs to a traditional hunter family.  A man approached him for meat. They struck a deal to buy the meat of the roasted Monitor Lizard for Rs 500. He has further said that the man who purchased the meat had shot the video while he was killing and roasting the Monitor Lizard.

Last month, a tribal was arrested in Maharashtra’s Palghar for killing a monitor lizard. The offence is punishable with a seven-year jail term.

Meanwhile, a picture of a monitor lizard wandering outside a house in the capital, New Delhi has gone viral on social media on Saturday. Senior police officer HGS Dhaliwal shared the picture on Twitter.
