The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel 2023: July 16 marks the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Our Lady of Mount Carmel or Virgin of Carmel is the name given to the Blessed Virgin Mary as the patroness of the Carmelite Order, particularly within the Catholic Church. In the late 12th and early to mid-13th centuries, the first Christian hermits settled on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land and became known as Carmelite monks. They built a chapel in the centre of their hermitages and consecrated it to the Blessed Virgin, whom they regarded as the ‘Lady of the place’ in terms of chivalry. Chile chose Our Lady of Mount Carmel as its patron saint in the 19th century.

History of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feast

The first Our Lady of Mount Carmel solemn liturgical feast was celebrated in England around the 14th century. Since the 15th century, the Brown Scapular, also known as the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, has been the focal point of this pervasive devotion. According to tradition, the Blessed Virgin Mary gave the scapular to the early Carmelite Saint Simon Stock. Historiographers have debated whether or not Saint Stock saw the Blessed Virgin Mary and the scapular in his vision. Even though Saint Simon Stock was never officially canonised, his feast day is observed by the church. In 1951, the Carmelite convent of Aylesford, England, underwent restoration and housed a relic of Saint Simon Stock. His feast is conducted in locations that honour him.

A document from the 13th century purported to be a letter from Saint Simon Stock’s secretary, Peter Swanington, was published in 1642 by a Carmelite friar, Fr. John Cheron. Historiographers have concluded that this letter was likely forged by Cheron himself in the early 20th century. People observe the liturgical feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on July 16. The purpose of this celebration is to express devotion to the patron saint, the Virgin Mary. The selected date, July 17, conflicted with the feast of St. Alexis on the European continent, necessitating a date modification to July 16, which remains the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on the Roman Calendar of the Catholic Church.
