During a trial run, Delhi Metro trains collide at Kalindi Kunj station

In a freak incident, two Delhi Metro trains came on the same track at the Kalindi Kunj depot on the yet-to-open Botanical Garden to Janakpuri West line. An accident was averted but an inquiry has been ordered by the authorities to look into the matter.

The new trains, which are equipped with advanced anti-collision technology, collided on Friday during commissioning at the depot on Line 8, which is slated to become operational next year, reported Hindustan Times.

“An incident occurred on Friday at 3:45 pm at Kalindi Kunj depot of Line 8, in which a train, which was under complete control of Hyundai Rotem for commissioning, was moved perhaps inadvertently in reverse direction by the Rotem staff,” said Anuj Dayal, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation spokesperson.

No casualties have been reported, as the trains were empty during the run.

The new corridor will connect 25 stations between Janakpuri West and Botanical Garden. Metro authorities had extended the trial runs on this line a few days ago on a 13.5 km stretch between Botanical Garden and Kalkaji Temple.
