US President Donald Trump signed another controversial executive order to radically change Barack Obama’s climate policies, ceding American leadership in the international campaign to combat global warming.
Trump signed the order at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), keeping his campaign promise to revive the coal industry.
In the new executive order, Trump made clear that the United States had no intention of meeting the commitments that Obama had made to curb global warming.
“With today’s executive action, I am taking historic steps to lift the restrictions on American energy, to reverse government intrusion and to cancel job-killing regulations,” Trump said after signing the order.
“My action today is the latest in the series of steps to create American jobs and to grow American wealth. We’re ending the theft of American prosperity and rebuilding our beloved country,” he added.
Throughout the presidential campaign, Trump had vowed to roll back Obama’s major climate change policies and added that American leadership in the global campaign to combat climate changes will take a back seat to revive energy industry.
Meanwhile, business groups have praised the Trump administration’s move but environmental campaigners have condemned it.
