HISTORY OF U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY DAY

After concluding that an air force academy was necessary, the U.S. In 1954, Congress enacted legislation to initiate the construction of the Air Force Academy site. President Dwight D. Eisenhower established the academy on April 1, 1945, despite the fact that its permanent location was not yet complete. The inaugural Class of 1959 was sworn in on July 11, 1955, at a temporary location at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver. The academy’s dedication ceremony was conducted on the same day and televised nationally. Interestingly, legendary Hollywood film director Cecil B. DeMille designed the cadets’ uniforms.

The Cadet Honor Code was ratified by the founding class, and the Falcon was selected as the academy’s mascot. The wing of 1,145 cadets moved to the current location outside of Colorado Springs on August 29, 1958, and the Academy was accredited less than a year later. On 3 June 1959, the inaugural cohort of U.S. Air Force graduated and entered service. Vietnam was the first conflict in which academy graduates fought and perished. As a consequence, it had a significant impact on the character development of the academy. During this time period, enrollment in academies increased dramatically due to the increased demand for pilots. The number of students who graduated increased from 217 in 1961 to 745 in 1970.

Since President Dwight D. Eisenhower founded the academy on April 1, 1954, it has consistently produced leaders of character who exemplify courage, humility, and a dedication to putting others before themselves.
