Greater Noida trader arrested over offensive Facebook post on Yogi Adityanath

A trader was arrested in Greater Noida for allegedly sharing a Facebook post deemed ‘offensive’ against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, officials issued a statement on Thursday.

“The accused, identified as Chand Quraishi a resident of Jewar town got arrested on Wednesday evening,” they said.

When contacted, Quraishi said he shared the post by “mistake”.

Police officials issued a statement, “Quraishi shared a post on Facebook which was deemed offensive against the chief minister. A complaint has also been filed at Jewar police station by a local resident after which the accused, a trader got arrested.”

Quraishi is booked under the Indian Penal Code section 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), among others, the police reiterates.

In June 2019, a similar case of this sort occurred when two persons were arrested in UP’s Gorakhpur district for allegedly making seemingly objectionable comments on social media against the chief minister.

Prior to that, a Noida-based journalist, the head, and the editor of a private TV news channel got arrested over airing “objectionable content” against Adityanath.

Prashant Kanojia, a freelance journalist, was arrested by Uttar Pradesh police in Delhi on Saturday for a tweet that stated had “objectionable comments” on Yogi Adityanath.

The same evening, the head of private television news channel Nation Live and its editor too were arrested in Noida for airing allegedly defamatory content on the Chief Minister, the police said.
