A pregnant woman who was taunted by the Shahjahanpur district magistrate over getting pregnant for the fourth time, died after delivering a boy on Saturday.

In a video that went viral on Friday, Rekha, a resident of Singha village in the district’s Mirzapur area, was seen complaining to DM Indra Vikram Singh against the government hospital administration for not admitting her. However, Shahjahanpur DM Indra Vikram Singh in the video could be heard casually telling the woman, “sharm nahi aati, do kaafi nahi hain (aren’t you ashamed? Are two children not enough?).”

On Saturday, Rekha passed away during labour. Her family members claimed that despite the DM’s intervention, no doctor had come to see her after she was admitted at the government hospital. “She felt disheartened and said that she should be taken out of the hospital,” said the woman’s brother-in-law Mukesh.

The woman had been turned away due to shortage of beds in the hospital. She had then complained about it to the DM. After making the comment, the DM had ordered the CMS to immediately admit her to the hospital. A day later, due to reasons unknown, the woman’s husband shifted her to a private hospital. She died there due to excessive bleeding after childbirth.

Now, a number of social organisations, including Farmers’ Union, have lodged a complaint against the official with Women Commission and CM Yogi Adityanath.
