The Uttarakhand Assembly one and all passed a resolution on Wednesday to declare cow the ‘Rashtra Mata’. The State Animal Husbandry Minister Rekha Arya moved a resolution in the Assembly and got it passed without exception after it got the support of both opposition and treasury benches.

“Giving a very high status to the cow is good, but we often hear that cows are dying in cow shelters across the country due to lack of care and required facilities. The Congress has no problem with the cow being declared Rashtra Mata, but much more needs to be done on the ground to truly respect the cow,” said Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, Indira Hridayesh.

The resolution to declare the cow ‘mother of the nation’ will be sent to the Centre. The opposition party of Uttarakhand, Congress also gave complete agreement to the resolution. The party leaders also emphasised on making more efforts to protect and conserve the cow and its offspring.

“Our government has been working towards cow protection… we are constructing shelters across the state. Getting the status of Rashtra Mata for the cow is another step towards cow protection,” said Arya.
