Former Telecom Minister and veteran Congress leader from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, Pandit Sukh Ram Sharma has passed away at the age of 95 in Delhi.

He suffered a brain stroke. Actor Aayush Sharma’s grandfather and veteran politician, Pandit Sukh Ram Sharma was admitted to a hospital after he suffered from a brain stroke.

Sukh Ram was the first man who made the first mobile phone call in India. Pandit Sukh Ram Sharma was admitted to AIIMS Hospital in Delhi, post suffering a brain stroke.

Sukh Ram, popularly known as Panditji, served as the Minister of Communications and Information Technology in the Narasimha Rao government from 1993 to 1996.

It was during his tenure as the communication minister that the booming Indian telecom sector was first opened up for the private sector that has helped the country to witness a boom in mobile phone technologies.

Sukh Ram was a member of Lok Sabha from the Mandi constituency of Himachal Pradesh. He won the Vidhan Sabha elections five times and the Lok Sabha elections three times.

He also has served as a minister of the Dr YS Parmar cabinet, who was the first chief minister of Himachal Pradesh.
