King assisted in the organization of the March on Washington in 1963 and delivered his renowned “I Have a Dream” address, which stands as one of the most renowned appeals for liberty and equality in recorded history. The March on Washington played a significant role in advancing the 1964 Civil Rights Act. In his final months on earth, King shifted his attention to improving the lives of those living in destitution. He thus exerted effort in coordinating the Poor People’s Campaign. Regrettably, his tenure on this campaign came to an end on April 4, 1968, when he was assassinated from the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee.
