Virgin of Caacupé Day 2023: Virgin of Caacupé Day is observed annually on December 8 and has been a centuries-old, venerated Paraguayan custom. Thousands of pilgrims visit a small community in central Paraguay annually on this date to observe the anniversary of a sacred apparition. A century ago, a Guaraní sculptor named José miraculously averted death by a narrow margin. In fulfillment of his pledge to the celestial beings, he proceeded to carve an exquisite statue representing the virgin. Since then, the nation of Paraguay has been continued to be guided and protected by Our Lady of Caacupé.
The History of Virgin of Caacupé Day
The narrative concerning the Virgin Mary and José has undergone significant evolution throughout the centuries, imparting unique insights and connotations to each version. The origin of the Virgin of Caacupé can be traced back to a momentous day in 1600, when José, a sculptor, departed from his residence in order to gather kindling. A faction of men from an opposing tribe, the Mbaya, approached him abruptly while he was working, placing him in a perilous situation. José, originally of Guaraní descent, underwent a Christian conversion in the 17th century at the behest of numerous missionary groups operating in the country. The Guaraní were unique among the nations in that they embraced Christianity, as the others abstained from the faith. Fearing for his life, he commenced a period of prayer. According to legend, in Guaraní, a magnificent Virgin Mary appeared and communicated with him. “Ka aguy kupépe” translates to “Get behind that bush” in English and was her words to José.
Sequestered behind a tree, José continued to pray fervently. He vowed that in the event of his survival, he would carve an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the tree that shelter him. As a result of a divine intervention, the mbaya passed by unnoticed. José honored his solemn oath to Mary. While the sculptor intended to create a larger statue for his community, it ultimately ended up in Tobat.
This beneficent apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary is venerated at the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Miracles in Caacupé at present. The city is among the most significant spiritual centers in Paraguay.
